All of the plants offered from hardytropicals are gown on site.

All orders are handled from start to finish by one person and most often are shipped the same day.

The exception on shipping is we no longer ship plants out on Thursday because of the potential of prolonged shipping time

Frequently asked Questions

One thing for sure, I do not think any of these plants can be called zera scape plants

Bananas Care Quickly:

  • Plenty of water in growing season
  • Use a high nitrogen fertilizer such as 21-7-14
  • Cut fertilizer back in August
  • Best to avoid windy sites
  • Allow frost to cut the foliage back
  • Only protect during extended freezes

Ferns Quickly

  • Most are not tolerant of full sun
  • Generally not happy if allowed to dry out
  • Are happiest in soils high in organics
  • Tree ferns must be watered through the top of trunk
  • Cut old fronds off in late winter to look the best
  • Enjoy the use of organic fertilizer such as fish emulsion

Grasses Quickly

  • Most of the deciduous ones (ex. Miscanthus) cut old foliage off in late winter before new growth, all can be cleaned up in late winter.
  • Do well with application of regular lawn fertilizer twice a growing season.

  • Sedges have edges
  • Most of the sedges like pretty damp conditions but will tolerate somewhat drier ones.

Hostas Quickly

  • Generally are not very tolerant of drying out
  • Most are shade tolerant
  • Gold to green handle more sun than blue
  • Blue Hosta will be fairly green in fuller sun as the wax layer that creates the blue melts
  • Appreciate frequent feeding with fairly high nitrogen fertilizer, we use 18-4-12
  • Divide in spring
  • Biggest problem: the garden thugs snails and slugs
  • Choose Hosta with more "substance" to help with garden thugs

Palms Quickly

  • Are generally happy with quite a lot of sun
  • Are drought tolerant but will be better looking and happier with summer hater
  • Fertilize with fertilizer high in minerals
  • Small plants will have to be protected in very cold area at least for the first few years
